Cammell Laird, Birkenhead

Cammell Laird as it is today Since Peel acquired the Cammell Laird site it has invested more than £300,000 in improvements. Many of the buildings have had long awaited essential repairs and those which were dilapidated have been demolished.

Peel continues to work closely with Northwestern Shiprepairers and Shipbuilders Ltd (part owned by the Peel), – soon to be renamed Cammell Laird to reconfigure their areas of occupation following the steady increase in workload over the past 3 years and as a result the seemingly doomed site is now seeing resurgence.

The Council has worked hard over many years to ensure that the Cammell Laird site was protected for employment use and with its partnership with Peel all are confident that with the continued help and cooperation of staff and managers we will create an ever increasing number of jobs and maximise its potential and attract new business thus contributing to Wirral’s local economy.

Northwestern currently directly employs 450 people and over 1000 people work in the shipyard. Northwestern currently has £50 million worth of orders on the books, and hopes to secure other contracts which will hopefully see the main construction hall used for marine engineering in the near future.

Northwestern since moving back to the shipyard has doubled in size, and has firmly established itself as a centre of excellence for ship repair, conversion, and military refit.

Other businesses successfully operate from the Cammell Laird site are Thurston Building Systems, UMAX Ltd, Lookers, Pulse Records and Production Ltd, Denbridge Marine Ltd, Transfood Limited, Global Environmental Recycling Company and Lindstrand Hot Air Balloons.
