Deposit Grounds
The Frodsham Deposit Grounds extend to around 407 hectares and consist of a complex of six dredging deposit
grounds. Whilst part of the site is actively used for the deposit of dredgings from the Manchester Ship Canal,
the remainder provides opportunities for the utilisation of organic materials to support the growth of
biomass.
Peel also owns and manages deposit grounds at Woolston which consists of a complex of five dredging deposit
grounds. Due to the nature of the deposit ground operations the site has become of major interest for birds
and is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The recovery of sand from the dredged materials has
been undertaken for many years but this operation is now being transferred to the specially designed Thelwall
Materials Recovery Facility which is located on a former dredging deposit ground, separated from the Woolston
Deposit Grounds by the Thelwall Viaduct.
The site is being utilised for the recycling and recovery of waste arising from construction demolition and
excavation wastes. The residue from this operation is being used to construct a lagoon to recover dredged
materials and a nature reserve.
