An Introduction to the Ocean Gateway

Peel Holdings’ “Ocean Gateway” is the name given to Peel’s proposed £50 billion investment strategy for the North West Region to be phased over the next few decades. This concept stretches over 50 miles encompassing the North West’s two great cities of Manchester and Liverpool and is the largest private sector investment in any geographically definable part of the UK.

Peel’s vision is to establish the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal corridor as a key source of new jobs, investment, development and environmental improvements between Manchester and Liverpool.
Through the Ocean Gateway, Peel is sharing ideas and attracting investment interest for its most significant projects in the area around the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal corridor. Together, these projects present a major opportunity to put the North West in a better position to compete, both internationally with other cities and regions, and with other parts of the UK, in particular towards reducing the North-South divide.

Peel is investing in the long term future of the North West Region and the Peel projects will have a major influence on how people live and work in the region and visit the region in this 21st century. The focus of the Ocean Gateway is to raise the profile of the North West in a positive way, encouraging inward investment and wealth creation, bringing with it new people, new businesses and thus encouraging people to make homes for themselves and play their part in the growth of the Region.

Peel has a strong track record in delivering major developments in the North West, including The Trafford Centre and Liverpool John Lennon Airport attracting over 37 million visitors/passengers every year. The Group’s assets employ over 4,000 people who work hard to ensure that its businesses and projects provide genuine benefits to the areas around them, by employing local people, bringing high quality development, attracting investors as well as minimising impact upon the local environment. Peel is not only seeking to minimise environmental impact but is also bringing creative and innovative solutions to the use of transport, water and energy infrastructure, such as new wind farms and using water instead of roads for transporting goods.

The Ocean Gateway represents a unique opportunity for the North West Region to grasp private investment on a scale that has not previously been seen in the Region.
