Landfill
Arpley Landfill site has been a major disposal facility for the North West’s waste since 1988 and is the largest
landfill site in the region. The site extends to over 160 hectares with a further 75 hectares occupied by the Moore
Nature Reserve. The site produces significant amounts of landfill gas, which is captured and burnt to produce
renewable electricity. As well as being located adjacent to the Manchester Ship Canal, the site is also located
close to the North West Main Rail Line which presents options for the importation of waste by means other than road.
With the potential to extend further, this site represents strategic long term landfill capacity for the North West.
