Port Wirral

Aerial Photo of Port Wirral Port Wirral is a part operational port, part petrochemical storage area, located on land adjacent to Queen Elizabeth II Dock and off North Road, Eastham.

Peel is planning here a new world class multi-modal port facility with water, road and rail potential.

The Port Wirral scheme proposes a new modern world class port and portcentric distribution facility at the entrance to the Manchester Ship Canal.

The scheme will accommodate a transfer of port activity from Ellesmere Port Docks and Runcorn Docks and allow for forecast growth in port throughput. By 2030, it is predicted that the facility could be handling 1 million tonnes more than that handled at Ellesmere Port and Runcorn Docks at present. Coal, dry bulks, steel, forest products are the main freights expected to be handled.

The facility will be multimodal with canal, road (close to the M53) and rail potential (via a reinstated and improved rail line and sidings). The scheme also offers potential for Vauxhall (neighbouring the site) to import parts and/or export cars by water or rail.

The proposals demonstrate Peel’s commitment to investment in port infrastructure, making the most sustainable use of water and rail, and delivering against key Ocean Gateway objectives.
